about

Back story: I came back to Bloomington in late Nov 1969, crashed at the "Bandits' house" on 10th and Lincoln. Eventually, my presence altered the Bandits hippie band, turning the love fest into sounds few people liked. I witnessed a 200 human deep snake dance around Alumni Hall while Dale Sophiea sang Willie The Pimp, as Bruce Anderson ran his pre-MX 80 guitar whammy. Everyone in the hall was dancing, clapping or beating on some percussion. Within months, the communal vibe gave way to “art” and an unhappy hippie audience who blamed me, the “acid totalitarian”.
Was I ? Damn if I know, but I could see the country's fascism growing and perhaps I was too verbal about it, but not sure how I was forcing anyone to do anything against their will. ( well, there’s the Cage riff when he heard Glenn Branca- called it totalitarian music where it’s so loud/ intense that you can have no other thoughts) Were the Bandits that intense ? Were we too enamored of Archie Shepp and S Clay Wilson while the rest of the town was plentiful with Dead Heads ?
Yes, there were performances amidst the songs - In Vincennes we re-enacted the war in the middle east -maybe there was too much jamming - maybe the influence of Mark Gray was too prominent ? Mark Hood and his great mixing was a positive. the drumming of Mike Berkowitz in his pre Liza Minelli phase, the Yale gig on May Day 1970, the birth of Cold Pizza. This will all become clear someday, even as I run out of time to tell the story.
